Kind of like superstition in a light way, and obsessive compulsive on the other end. Ritual means respect for a way of doing things and faith that when done properly what is wanted is going to manifest. Ritual is a complex as casting the circle and saluting the corners; It is knowing when to travel Deosil (clockwise) or Widdershins (counter clockwise).
Rituals have strength if you create them yourself. They are an intent that is about to be manifest. They can be called superstition but there has to be a point where that vanishes and belief takes over. Everyone has rituals. The method of scratching a scratch and win lottery ticket. The blue garter on the Bride's leg when she gets married; the something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.
Ritual can be create to bring down the power of the moon, to create a blessing from the earth or to help worship the sun. All of those ritual are real rituals and yet so are the others. Big or small the ritual is in the creation which is judged by the situation; and whether or not it works.
There are times when a ritual can be a problem. Only flying on a full moon for example, could limit your travels. Only trusting men with gold hair could take away a soul friend with brown hair. Rituals good or bad are a part of our life.
Rituals also include protection. Casting the circle, opening and closing it, all of this is a ritual to keep you safe, to basically keep you safe and help things work. Don't let go of the ability to protect youself because, yes, there is a need to.
